Sounding Better on the Phone:
- You can make a better impression on the phone by opening your mouth wider as you speak and moving your lips more.
- Most people don't move their lips enough, which flattens the tone of their voice.
- Do not squeeze the phones between your neck and shoulder. This tenses your throat and makes you talk from one side of your mouth.
- Speak in your lower vocal range. Telephones transmit lower pitches more truly than higher tones.
- Speak clearly and directly into the mouthpiece Avoid smoking and/or eating while interviewing.
- Put warmth in your voice, be enthusiastic and assertive Your #1 goal is to get a personal interview.
- Eliminate background noises, if possible.
- Confirm pronunciation and spelling of interviewer's name and title, ask permission to address by first name.
- Use correct grammar.
- Let the company interviewer do most of the talking.
- Answer questions in complete sentences using fact and examples - Avoid yes/no answers.
- Ask questions, have a list of questions at your fingertips i.e. company revenues.
- Discuss job responsibilities.
- Take notes.
- Salary or benefits should not be discussed during the initial telephone interview.
- Express interest in the job and ask to get together in person to discuss it further Say "Thank You".
- Remember to express your appreciation for the time spent with you. |
